Expand your mind (Life through multiple lenses)

In 2014, a lady blasted me on social media, accusing me of "pretending to be someone I'm not…"

The truth was, I had decided I didn't want to continue being who I was.

I wanted more.

Up until that point, I hadn't taken responsibility for who I had become and how my life was playing out. I felt like I had only cast a vision for my career, which I now call my professional vision. The problem with solely setting a professional vision is that it neglects many aspects that would build a better personal vision.

I had never really thought about what I wanted the rest of my life to look like.

As a result, I found myself neglecting personal relationships. I was living for the weekend, trying to escape the stress of the week, and I didn't feel like I was enjoying life.

I wanted more but wasn't quite sure what it would look like. I only had my past experiences to base success on, and I hated it. I hated myself, I doubted myself, and I didn't believe I could change.

Sometimes, your life burns down around you to allow you to rise from the ashes. I hit rock bottom and decided I didn't want to stay there.

This left me with only one direction to go… upwards. I have worked with hundreds of men who have found themselves in similar situations. They had a professional vision for their life but now feel an internal void… or a hole… it feels like something is missing.

You can watch some of their experiences here (Testimonials).

Life doesn't have to be lived that way. It's far too short if we only adopt the beliefs we are fed through school. Many of us will never be happy.

My life has improved tenfold since I started challenging my perspective on things.

People often limit their experiences by only viewing life through a single lens. This leads to a life that lacks meaning, understanding, and enjoyment.

This has been at the forefront of my mind recently as I've been taking photos for Sheppard, one of Australia's largest musical exports over the last decade.

My wife is in the band, and I thought it would be fun to capture moments and document the journey.

It has given me so much more. I own two businesses and pride myself on hard work and achievement.

But stepping aside to learn a new skill (photography), manage my time better, and capture moments has given me unique perspectives I had never considered.

Being behind the camera, I am constantly capturing unique shots that highlight perspective.

Capturing the band, I see energy, fulfilment, and entertainment. I get to witness those living out their passion.

Capturing the crowd, I see people feeling something through the music: appreciation, letting go, and being entertained.

It highlights two sides of the coin for the same event—something I have been able to introduce into my own life. I remind myself that in life, there are multiple perspectives to what I am experiencing.

Questions like:

  • "What are the differing perspectives here?"

  • "Which perspective will serve me right now?"

This helps because it opens me up to expanding my mind and my life. If I don't expand my mind, eventually, I will feel stuck because I will only ever continue doing what I now believe. As we all know, growth is important.

I've been spending a bit of time watching photography tutorials on YouTube, which has helped me develop the Multi-lens Framework I would like to share with you.

I've reflected on how I would go about gaining more perspective in life. If you want to try it out, you can use this in your own life.

I would love to hear your feedback on how it works for you. Just because it worked for me doesn't mean it will for you.

Multi-lens Framework

Taking a Different Role:

  • Example: Shifting from your usual routine to trying something new, like volunteering, joining a new group, or taking on a different role at work.

  • Application: Stepping out of your comfort zone to gain new perspectives. This can lead to personal growth and a broader understanding of different aspects of life.

Learning New Skills:

  • Example: Taking up a new hobby, such as photography, cooking, or a sport.

  • Application: Embracing opportunities to upskill and view life differently. Learning new skills can refresh your mindset and open up new possibilities.

Capturing Memories:

  • Example: Documenting experiences through journaling, photography, or creating a scrapbook.

  • Application: Reflecting on different aspects of an event to gain a deeper understanding. This practice can enhance your appreciation for life's moments and provide valuable insights.

Prioritising Tasks:

  • Example: Balancing various responsibilities by breaking them down into manageable steps.

  • Application: Managing time effectively to allow space for new experiences and perspectives. Prioritising tasks ensures that you can explore new opportunities without feeling overwhelmed.

Vision:

  • Example: Setting clear goals for what you want to achieve in different areas of your life.

  • Application: Focusing on long-term goals and aligning your actions with your vision. A well-defined vision can guide your decisions and help you stay on track toward achieving your dreams.

It's something I've been thinking about a lot.

I have found myself so focused on earning money and building a business that I have sacrificed many things I wish I didn't.

I battle with knowing that sacrifice is required to build a great life. But the idea of working 48 weeks a year for just 4 weeks of holiday does not sit well with me.

To be honest, I don't know anyone who really agrees with that. Yet we seem to have convinced ourselves that it's the only way to live.

I would love for you to start challenging that idea.

What is a lens you haven't looked through yet?

The life I now live was something I never understood. It's not for everyone, but it works for me.

People are so different. But we live in a time where there are so many podcasts to listen to, opportunities to make money, and ideas around success. Start exploring what is available.

You have the opportunity to make your life better through new understanding, increased creativity, improved empathy, and enhanced self-awareness.

Every opportunity you say yes to can provide perspective. Embrace it.
